Eagle sportswear

Edward Morrell started EAGLE USA in 1984.  But it really started earlier than that.

NORWICH MILLS 1964-1979

In 1964, newly married and expecting his first child, Ed went to work at the local Norwich, textile mill in Norwich, NY.   Norwich Mills was locally owned by a prominent Norwich family and was the town’s largest employer. Norwich Mills was a vertical, private label manufacturer that primarily manufactured children’s pajamas for JC Penny.    Ed worked in the cutting room.  With no experience and a knack for numbers, Ed worked hard to support his new family.  As the company prospered, Ed was trained on many jobs.  In 1967, he was trained and assigned as an industrial engineer and sent to North Carolina as part of Norwich Mill’s southern expansion.  Eventually, Ed became plant manager of the Wendell sew plant.

CHAMPION PRODUCTS 1974-1984

In 1974, Champion products purchased Norwich Mills in order to lock in consistent quality for their booming college athletic market. Ed stayed as plant manager of Champion’s Wendell Manufacturing Plant.  Champion was the largest employer in town and Ed became an integral part of the community; commissioner, mayor pro tem, Sunday school teacher.  Eventually, Ed was promoted to Director of Manufacturing and transferred to the corporate office in Rochester, NY.  As Director of Manufacturing with Champion Products, Ed was responsible for Champion’s manufacturing plants located in Wendell, NC, Clayton, NC, Lavonia, NY, Perry, NY, and Casa Grande, AZ.  Champion had unprecedented coverage in the college athletic market and was most known for the quality of the products they manufactured.  Quality was a result of control of every step of the manufacturing process.  The goal was always to make the best.  That was how business was done – you make a product you are proud to sell.  But while at the corporate offices, Ed saw things starting to change.  Sacrifices were being made to the product in the interest of profits.  Corporate lacked a personal relationship with the folks that made the product.  It was all about the numbers.  Champion was headed in a different direction.  Ed knew there would always be a need for quality.  Unhappy with the direction Champion was going, Ed resigned.

THE DREAM 1984 - PRESENT

He prepared a business plan.  Ed wanted to start an apparel company where every person is important and every garment is made as a representation of hard work, quality fabrics, and superior construction. Ed approached banks for financing and was unanimously declined. The banks said the textile and apparel manufacturing industry was too risky.  They were probably right, but they didn’t know Ed.  Ed decided to start the company anyway.  Severely undercapitalized but determined, Ed moved from Rochester, NY to Wendell, NC.  Ed leased a building, borrowed a table, sharpened some pencils, placed a help wanted ad in the local paper started taking applications.  He hired five key people that week.
An American business was born.
EAGLE USA started with 7 basic styles:  2-Button Placket, Tee Shirt, Tank Top, VNeck Tee and Shorts.   Every year was a struggle, but the business quietly grew.
Today, EAGLE USA has too many styles to count.  Product is made much like it was at Norwich Mills, and everyday presents a new challenge.   Over the years, Ed has reactivated four closed apparel factories in North Carolina.  EAGLE USA is the largest employer in 3 of the towns where these factories were saved.   Now with four North Carolina factories and over 300 dedicated and hard working US employees, EAGLE USA proudly competes globally with quality products still made solely in the United States.

THE FORMULA

Honesty, hard work and stubborn determination make EAGLE USA a company that defies the trends and thrives as an apparel manufacturer here in the USA.
